Pundamonium! 10,000 Laughs Festival! … Veldie’s Last Show

I am SO SORRY you have not heard word ONE from us if this is the way you’re following us (dude – Twitter! Facebook! I mean, I do want you to read this, but obviously not that much or else I would update more? No, keep reading. I’m working on it).

A LOT has been happening the past few months, like we had a totally SELL OUT run of “The Sex (Ed) Show!” in the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

We performed at Arts Midwest too and made NO bookings, but I did hand our CD to Garfunkel & Oates’ agent and told him we were funnier.  So, we’ll see how that works.

Well, this is tonight.  And… it’s Veldie’s last show.

I am really sad to announce that our guitarist Samantha “Veldie” Veldhouse is departing the Curls (at least for regulars, we’re remounting The Sex (Ed) Show! in Duluth in January – more details soon – and she’ll join us for that). She’s made amazing strides in her acting career and she’s finding that that’s taking up all her time.  We wish her all the best and look forward to the occasions when she’ll grace us and you, Curlfriends, with her presence again.  I had her write a lil’ thing for our blog… and here it is:

Veldie is leaving sex band.

When I said yes to taking Cherrie Mae’s place as the Curls’ regular guitar player back in 2012, I had no idea of the adventure that would follow. After two years of strumming my six string and singing a harmony here and there, my time playing with the Twin Cities’ favorite naughtybilly band has come to an end. It’s a choice that wasn’t easy to make. I’ve learned that being in a band is akin to that of being in a relationship: there are good times, there are tough times, but overall you are a part of something that has become part of who you are as a person; you can’t quite imagine your life without it.

Still, I’ve started to pursue other interests beyond dirty comedy music. Of all things that have taken my focus from using my beginner guitar skills to play songs about butt sex and nicknames for your privates, Shakespeare and learning about classical acting are taking precedence for me. It seems like an improbable step, but a little research shows that Shakespeare is just as (if not more) provocative as Courtney’s lyrics. I’ve spent most of 2014 working with Classical Actors Ensemble and in a mere month, will be opening my second repertory with them. Getting back to my theater roots has been refreshing and a huge reminder of why I do this stuff in the first place. I have to admit that I had a fear of theater in the big bad city when I first moved here 8 years ago. To get my stage time fix, I started taking improv classes from which I fell into the Minnesota Fringe Festival which ultimately lead me to being Court’s right-hand guitar strumming lady for the past two years. It’s been an amazing ride that I’d never thought I’d go on. I’ve gotten to play in Chicago, Milwaukee, Fargo, Cedar Rapids, Duluth, and even Mexico along with multiple venues around our very own Twin Cities. I’ve learned a lot about what being in a band means and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. But the theater beckons, and I’m going to foolishly follow its call (because let’s face it, there’s no career for me in the theater world what with me being 30 and just starting out, but hey! There’s no time like the present.).

I’ll miss you Curls! But that’s not to say I won’t try to catch a show or even step in to back up Court when I’m able. Being in a sex band is the last thing I thought I’d do, but it’s ironically brought me closer to the thing I wanted all along by giving me the confidence to get up on stage and entertain the masses. Thanks for everything, Curls!

“O Tis tragedy for me to abandon sex band, but hark! My way is paved in fortunes found on the stage.” –Not Shakespeare

SO. Come out tonight and join us in wishing Veldie well.  We’d love to see you. Show starts at 7:30 at Comedy Corner Underground (here’s all the details), it’s $13 (SO amazingly worth it – if you’ve never seen a Pundamonium show – it’s a show of comedians making up puns on the spot on categories they’re given moments before they take the stage. And it just ends up being amazingly hilarious).
